Fireworks Photography - July 2025

Over the past few years, I have come to really enjoy fireworks photography. I have shot dozens of displays, and it never gets old for me.

In my mind, there are a few keys to good fireworks images. First, you have to master the camera settings to capture the full grandeur of the lights in the bursts. Because of the bright flashes of light in the dark sky, the camera cannot capture the lighting contrast that the human eye sees, so it is also important to master the process of editing the images.

Lastly, but equally important, is capturing the context of the moment.

I believe the best fireworks photography also captures the elements from the location – whether it’s buildings, landmarks, people, etc.

This month’s image is one of those images. Taken at Chautauqua Lake, the fireworks display is enhanced by docked boats and the reflection of the display in the water.

Each year I share images taken at Niagara Falls, the Erie County Fair, the Buffalo Bisons, and other community events throughout Western New York.

A number of these displays are managed by Skylighters of New York, and I have come to know a number of their shooters. In recent years, they have shared their show schedule, and the exact location of the launch sites. This has allowed me to plan for the context for a number of these shows.

This image, from July 4, 2023, is one of those stories. They invited me to this private show on Chautauqua Lake, which allowed me to set up at a spot right on the edge of the water.

I’m sure I will be at number of Skylighters’ shows over the next few months, and I loo forward to trying to capture new and unique angles and locations.

Until then, please enjoy July 2025 from this year’s calendar.
