Welcome to "The 2025 Calendar - A Year of Images and Stories." Throughout the year, this page will be updated monthly with a new story about the photo featured in the respective month of the Tom Burns Photography 2025 Calendar.

“What type of photography do you do?”

It’s a question I get periodically, and my reply is usually “…landscape and cityscape, sunsets, and stuff like that.” Sometimes I’ll add that I do portraits and sports photography, but I don’t do weddings.

Truth be told, if I had to pick a favorite, there’s a good chance it would be nighttime/low-light photography. I love bringing the night to life with my camera. The movement of people and lights, illuminating areas that may seem otherwise dark, and capturing the beauty of the night.

If there is a building or structure that is illuminated, I will put it on my shot list and look for the right time to capture it.

Last year I traveled to get some images of the recently reopened AKG Museum. The museum is lit, and a great subject for night photography. As I wandered towards the back, I noticed activity around the March Casino in Delaware Park.

I have photographed the Casino before, and I have a nice image with a funny story – ask me about it sometime.

Anyway, there was a “Flow Jam” event taking place with DJs, fire jugglers, baton artists, etc. Most of the activity is out of the picture, towards the right, but you can see the twirling taking place in the image.

Despite the activity, for me the Casino is the true subject of the image. I love the illumination, which is accentuated by the reflection in Hoyt Lake.

It’s a fun image with good energy. I hope you are able to enjoy it all month long.
